I spoke with bubbly, Mark Rowell the other day. I knew he'd left his position with Bike Recycle as manager, teacher, and bike mechanic. What I didn't know was he'd started his own bike mechanic school, mainly educating under privileged kids in the art of fixing bikes. It's an extension of his previous work without the non-profit umbrella—more on his own terms.
Another facet of his business: he will make house calls. When you're flatted or can't make a repair...who you gonna call? Bike Doctor!

Nice! Actually,I was thinking more like "awesome",but I overuse that word sometimes it seems,LOL! It is nice to know there are people still around like this man,especially caring enough to help out those less fortunate than many :)

ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea and use of time. Teaching kids a really useful, mechanical skill. Gives me ideas.
ReplyDeleteWhen he worked at Old Spokes Home they taught kids to build up a bike then later gave them that bike, along with a helmet. In this new endeavor Mark is working with an organization that pays him to do something very similar. I don't know that they receive a bike at the end, but the young adults gain a valuable skill, something to boost their confidence, which may help in the future.
