Everyday Cyclist in Pearls

I wear mostly skirts in our office, more so than pants or dresses, mainly because the attire provides me with the opportunity to ride to work already semi-dressed, so-to-speak, swapping my black tights and socks for leggings and skirt when I get to work. It's a system that works very well for me as my commute is mainly downhill and I seem to arrive with little time to spare before my work day begins.

And so I found it quite amusing that I rode home today without my usual jacket - nippy morning temperatures had risen by afternoon into the balmy 60sF - which meant my top garments consisted of what I wore  all day long inside the office: linen shirt, lightweight sweater, and green pearl-like necklace. As I cruised home, the green beads flopping against my chest, I mused about how much I'd turned into the "everyday cyclist". Sure, I still wear lycra tights, but in all other respects I'm embracing this brilliant way to get around on two wheels.

Another everyday cyclist.

Everyday cyclist who dresses to keep cool.

    1. I dress for personal efficiency, obviously, but as more and more people do this, I believe it will break down barriers. Let's show the world that cycling for transportation is a valid way to move around.

  2. My clothing depends on the length of the ride & how presentable I have to be at the destination. Riding to work nay see me in lightweight summer jersey & knicks in our crazy summer heat, or, my usual work trousers & casual top. I usually change my top at work, just in case something happens. One work site has a uniform which I dislike, I cannot bring myself to wear it away from work.

  3. It's funny because I always, especially as a kid, rode in whatever was comfortable. When I was a kid the main concern was making sure my bell bottoms didn't get caught in the chain so I always had rubber bands with me. It wasn't until about 3 years ago, during a transit strike in my area, that I rode from the train to work on my bike. I still wore my regular work clothes; my pants were secured with a more modern velcro/dayglo arrangement. I've rode a mountain bike since I became an adult but for the transit strike rode a road bike I was given. It was very comfortable, light and fun so now I have "cycling" clothes; a day glo light jacket, dayglo sleeves, tights (both for winter and summer) and even a cap I received at a diabetes fundraiser ride. I never did dress for cycling until I rode a road bike! I now even have jeans suitable for riding my bike, of all things.

    1. I think it's interesting how, as cyclists, we've evolved in our clothing choices. I think it's natural to wear comfortable clothing. For me, that's often mixing non-padded tights with a dressy top!

  4. I often wear skirts at work so that I can go to work "half dressed" too. Such a great strategy!
